A hole is cut into a pipeline coating and salt solution applied over it. An electric current is the passed through the solution, with the pipe underneath the hole as the negative (cathode) terminal. This causes rapid oxidation/rusting arround the hole. The breaking away of the coating (disbondment) is then measured.
