Rubber or thermoplastic samples are torn apart, either with a small slit to start the tear or against the full width depending on which method is needed. The samples are placed in a tensile testing machine and the force measured whilst pulled apart. This test is commonly used in the aerospace industry for most silicone and rubber seals.
